For a while there, the idea of a destination wedding in Italy seemed to be something that wasn’t going to happen this year. The coronavirus pandemic has hit Italy very hard while the UK government placed restrictions on all kinds of travel.

Thankfully, things are starting to ease, and the great news is that destination weddings are back on! But what are the important things you need to know if you are planning to get married in Italy during the continuing pandemic?

Always check UK government advice

The first place you should always check before doing anything is the government’s travel advice for Italy (or any country). This tells you what restrictions might be in place or what the UK government is saying about any location.

For Italy, as we are writing this, there are no particular restrictions in place. Italy is one of the places exempt from the non-essential international travel restrictions so there’s no reason you can’t go.

Planning an intimate wedding

Once you know you are in the clear from the government to travel, then you can start to look at what you can and can’t do when you get to Italy. The good news is that things are a lot more flexible than a few months ago.  All businesses are reopened, and you can travel around different parts of the country as normal.

Now is also the prime time to plan a wedding if you want to get married in 2021 or early 2022.  It usually takes 12-18 months to get everything in place.  So, you don’t want to wait too long to get into planning mode.

It can be a window to get the best value for money.  Everyone has been hit hard by coronavirus and businesses are keen to offer special deals.  Not only that but with social distancing, there’s fewer people in attractions if you honeymoon in Italy after the wedding.  The locals may even have a bit more time to chat about their towns and sights – in a socially distanced way of course!

Stay in a villa

The intimate wedding is a huge trend for the last couple of years and the benefits of a small wedding are even clearer after the pandemic.

For example, you could hire a private villa set amid the cliffs and with stunning ocean views.  These are ideal for small, intimate weddings where all of your guests can stay in one place.  The ceremony can be held in the grounds and the reception too.  You can even get some where you can do fun things like get Italian cooking lessons during your stay!
